Abandoned Places

Abandoned Places

8" x 12" oil on stretched canvas with gloss varnish finish

This oil painting is inspired by a moment from a few months past. I was working as an environmental scientist at the time, and had just pulled up at an abandoned auto shop to collect groundwater samples. It was a bright, quiet morning, and the air was already heavy with Florida’s tropical heat. There were two blue paint-chipped buildings that stood low amidst the surrounding trees, with skeletons of  cars dotting the overgrown landscape. It seemed as if the commercial world had given up and moved on from that place, granting passage to nature’s return.

As I walked carefully through the weeds and car parts searching for wells, something about the sight of this wildflower growing upon its rusted, concrete shelf struck me. Its gentle movement and bright hues were perfectly pure and full of hope amidst the decay of human creation. It made me smile out there, alone in that abandoned place.

May this painting be a reminder that hope surrounds us all, and mostly, may it make you smile.
